Italian Stuffed Jumbo Shells

I used to laugh in the grocery at the jumbo pasta used in this recipe, imagining macaroni and cheese made with shells a golf ball could fit in. Now, we keep 2 or 3 boxes in the pantry for these Italian stuffed jumbo shells!

These jumbo shells are stuffed with flavorful Italian sausage, rich pasta sauce, and hearty ground beef, then topped with a layer of thick mozzarella cheese.

The thought of using these jumbo shells was intimidating to me at first, but this recipe is easy to master and nothing but fun. I could do it in my sleep now!

So much of what I love about cooking is who I do it with. This is a great recipe to enlist some help and make some memories! Stuffing 25+ jumbo shells isn’t hard, but it sure goes by faster with a couple extra hands.

Where we live in Japan, I can’t get the kind of Italian sausage I prefer in the states, so I started making my own using breakfast sausage. I’ll never buy the pre-seasoned stuff again!

You can find my recipe for homemade Italian sausage here! To summarize: you’ll grab some mild sausage and mix in minced garlic + a a few flavor packed spices. Easy and so worth it!

I highly recommend trying it instead of the pre-made stuff. While this recipe is still amazing with store-bought Italian sausage, this recipe packs so much more flavor.

For an extra touch, sprinkle powdered Parmesan cheese over your shells. These pair well with garlic bread of course!

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31

Italian Stuffed Jumbo Shells

  • Prep time: 25 minutes
  • Cook time: 20 minutes
  • Total time: 1 hour
  • Servings: 6-10

Jumbo shells stuffed to the brim with Italian flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 box jumbo shells
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground italian sausage
  • 1 jar pasta sauce
  • 1 bag mozzarella cheese

Materials

  • 9x13 pan
  • large skillet
  • large pot
  • strainer

Instructions

  • 1)
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Place water in a medium to large sized pot on your stove top at high heat to boil. Keep in mind the jumbo shells take up much more room in the water than other pasta.
    3. Place your hamburger and Italian sausage into a large skillet on medium heat, to brown. At this step and continuously while cooking, use a spatula to break down the chunks of meat into finer pieces. If using my Italian sausage recipe (recommended!), prepare and add to the skillet with the hamburger.
    4. When your pot of water is boiling, add jumbo shells and cook for 12 minutes.
    5. Stir your hamburger and Italian sausage mixture to evenly combine them.
    6. When thoroughly browned, carefully drain grease and remove from heat.
    7. Add your pasta sauce to the meat mixture and stir to combine. Remove from heat and do not cover, as this mixture cooling off will help you in the long run!
    8. After 12 minutes, carefully pour jumbo shells into a strainer in the sink. Using the spray attachment, or faucet, run cold water over shells, cooling them. They should be comfortable to touch by the time you’re done. Be careful stirring them in the strainer with your hand, as some may have pockets of very hot water inside!
    9. Lightly grease your 9×13 pan.
    10. With clean hands, grab a jumbo shell in your non dominant hand. Hold it open with your fingers. With your other hand, use a spoon to stuff the shell with the meat mixture. Be careful, this could still be pretty hot! I stuff them almost completely full, but it’s your preference.
    11. Repeat this process until you run out of meat. I usually have 4+ jumbo shells left, which works because that’s about how many rip while cooking and handling.
    12. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the dish.
    13. Bake for 15 minutes on 350. At this time, broil for 1-2 minutes, or until browned. Watch closely!
    14. Serve and enjoy!

What a great & easy recipe this is. So tasty and flavorful. I make enough where I have it for a couple of meals during the week. I will make again!
