Cutout Christmas Cookies

Making these cutout Christmas cookies is a tradition in my family, and now it can be for yours too!

This recipe is simple, kid friendly, and sure to be a hit at any holiday party or potluck.

You’re just a few common household ingredients away from making these cookies, and priceless memories, this holiday season.

The fun starts in this recipe when you get to cut the cookies. I LOVED making these with my family growing up because we got to make a big mess of flour on the counter. When did that ever happen?!

Sure, they taste great, but my favorite thing about these cookies is the hundreds of shapes you can make them into. Have Christmas tree shaped cookie cutters? Perfect. Have some shaped like dinosaurs (we did!), your home state, or your favorite celebrity? Go for it!

Don’t have any cookie cutters? Grab this 5 pack on Amazon, or this 18 piece set! If you prefer plastic over metal, this is the set I have. Want more variety? Try this 100 piece set that’s just a few dollars more than the small metal ones!

These easy cutout Christmas cookies bake for just around 10 minutes, and are well worth the wait. This dough yields around 12-18 cookies, largely depending on the size of your cookie cutters.

Once cooled, let the decorating begin!

I use Pillsbury vanilla icing and colored sprinkles, but the possibilities are endless. I prefer this icing because it dries (DRIES, not hardens!), making these cookies stack-able and less messy to eat!

For storage, I place these in an airtight container with a torn up piece of bread to keep them soft. If you didn’t know about this, it’s a MAJOR cookie life hack!

How are you going to decorate these cutout Christmas cookies? Let me know in the comments below!

Cutout Christmas Cookies

  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 10 minutes
  • Total time: 45 minutes

These chewy cutout Christmas cookies are sure to impress at any holiday potluck! Make sweet memories in the kitchen with this kid friendly recipe. Yields approximately 15 cookies, greatly depending on the size of your cookie cutters!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (1 stick)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tub vanilla icing
  • colored sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

Dough Prep

    1. Sift flour, baking soda, and salt together in a medium sized mixing bowl. Set aside.
    2. In a stand mixer or mixing bowl with handheld beater, cream butter until light and fluffy.
    3. Gradually add sugar to bowl, then vanilla and egg.
    4. Slowly add flour mixture. Stir until just combined.
    5. Chill dough in refrigerator for 2+ hours. It can be made ahead and chilled for up to 2 days.

Making Cookies

    1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
    2. With a rolling pin, flatten dough onto a well floured countertop. 1/4 inch is around the sweet spot, rolling too thin will increase the chances of your cookies becoming hard and burnt!
    3. Cut cookies and place onto a greased baking sheet. When you run out of space to cut, gather leftover dough and form into a ball. Flatten again and repeat until completely out of dough.
    4. Bake for 8-12 minutes, or until bottoms have slightly browned.
    5. Place cookies onto a cooling rack. Once cooled, decorate with icing, sprinkles, or whatever you’d like!
    6. Once the icing is dry, place into an airtight container. For best results, tear up a piece of bread and place into the container with the cookies. This keeps them soft for days!
