Long John Silvers Does Coleslaw Right
When I first started experimenting with coleslaw recipes, I couldn’t believe how simple it was to make.
Mainly because I have had so much NASTY coleslaw out at restaurants! If fast food restaurants can get it right, why can’t fancy ones?!
The recipe I decided on tastes just like Long John Silvers Coleslaw recipe to me.
It’s tangy, sweet, easy to make, and goes perfectly with BBQ & fried fish!

What You’ll Need For Copycat Long John Silvers Coleslaw
Besides a bag of coleslaw mix, I bet you already have most of these ingredients for this copycat Long John Silvers coleslaw recipe in your kitchen!
Ingredients
- 1 standard sized bag of coleslaw mix
- 2/3 cup mayonnaise (I use light)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1/2 tsp salt (kosher salt if you have it!)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Notes
I don’t shred my own cabbage with a sharp knife for this, I use a bag of coleslaw mix. I can catch it on sale for $0.78 sometimes, making this such an affordable option for a weeknight side!
I prefer the cabbage blend with red (purple) cabbage in it like Long John Silvers, though it’s not necessary.
While you can use regular mayonnaise, I use light and it’s still amazing!

What To Pair With This Long John Silver’s Cole Slaw Copycat Recipe
This creamy coleslaw is the perfect side dish for fried fish! Just like at Long John Silver’s, a battered fish fillet is a great compliment to this coleslaw.
Specifically, I make my small batch beer batter cod.
The steaming hot crunchy fillet is a match made in heaven to this cold, tangy coleslaw just like they do it at the restaurant. Add french fries and your taste buds will be in heaven!
Make your own hushpuppies with your meal and you’ll never need to hit the drive thru again.
Are you one of those people that gets malt vinegar with your meal at LJS? Don’t forget to grab some at the grocery!
My second favorite thing to eat this Long John Silver’s Coleslaw Recipe with is BBQ chicken or pork chops.
Pairing these two dishes just screams summer cookout, no matter the time of year.
If you’ve never had a slaw burger- that’s a must try too! Simply pile a few tbsp of this coleslaw on top of your next cheeseburger.
You can also top a pulled pork sandwich with the tangy flavor of coleslaw, or put it in your crispy buffalo chicken wrap.
You might think of coleslaw as a summer cookout food, but my favorite time to make this is for holiday potlucks.
Being a busy time of the year for most of us, Thanksgiving and Christmas potlucks can be overwhelming, especially if you have several in quick succession. Que this delicious side dish recipe!
As you can see, this coleslaw take mere minutes to mix up and is ideal for making the night before and storing for a next day office potluck.
Since it’s cheap, it’s a great option for the months your budget is tight. You might even be applauded for bringing vegetables to a sweets filled spread!
Storing Copycat Long John Silver’s Cole Slaw
This coleslaw should be refrigerated in an airtight container (or bowl with plastic wrap)and kept cold until serving. As noted in the recipe, it’s best served a couple hours after it’s mixed.
For best results, eat or serve within 24 hours.
I’ll use my glass Pyrex food storage containers if I’m preparing this to eat at home, and my Rubbermaid plastic containers if I’m taking this coleslaw to a BBQ or potluck!
